Simple Tips to Make your Garage Tools Dust Free

A garage is very useful probably because it allows you to store your tools and keep them in their original state. Many homeowners have different types of garages for different uses. However, one of the challenges that all homeowners with garages have is being in a position to maintain the cleanliness of the facility. Dust is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to making your garage dirty. For over ten years, I have been a garage owner and fighting dust has never been my problem. In this article, I will provide you with some simple but effective tips that will make your garage remain dust free.

What causes dust in a garage?

Since a garage comprises of many tools and materials, it is somewhat difficult to pinpoint the exact source of dust in the facility. However, if you have concrete stored in the garage, it is most likely the number one reason for dust causation. Other materials such as pet fur, hair, and flakes of skin can also be a source of dust in the garage. However, when a garage is dirty, you do not need to care about the source of the dust but rather clean it off first. Take the steps below:

1. Pick the right day

Cleaning a garage requires that you put all your heart in the task and dedicate a lot of time to the process. Pick a day with a favorable weather condition preferably not a dusty one. Take the materials and tools in the garage and place them at one end of the room. Wipe the ones that you can and leave the rest for the later parts.

2. Start the cleaning process

For proper air circulation in your garage, open the doors and the windows. Start by sweeping the floor and collecting the dirt. Use your preferred detergent and water to clean your garage using a mop. Depending on the extent of the dirt and dust, take your time to cover all the places in the garage. Begin with the upper parts as you move to the lower regions and out of the garage.

While at it, wipe all the surfaces that have dust settled on them while at the same time ensuring that you are using a clean cloth to do the job. Otherwise, you might be transferring dust from one end to another. If you opt to use a vacuum cleaner, ensure that the dust removed does not settle in other parts of the garage.

3. Seal the concrete in your garage

Apart from cleaning your garage on a regular basis, preventing excessive production of dust is another way to have a dust-free garage. While cleaning, be careful to seal the concrete in your facility and other places that are likely to cause dust. For instance, if you have concrete in your garage, you can stop it from emitting too much dust by sealing the surface using a concrete sealer. In my garage, I applied the sealer directly into the concrete, and it worked.

4. Install the right vents

Right before I discovered my mistake, dust used to pass through the vents and settle on the tools in my garage. However, a friend of mine suggested that I should use a filter over the vents. It turns out this is the most sensible thing that he has ever suggested to me because ever since I did so, the amount of dust in my garage reduced significantly. No dust, leaves or other small debris gain access to my garage now. Unlike in the past, I do not have to clean my garage regularly because very little dust is present.

Depending on the model of your garage doors, I recommend that you install door seals that will help prevent dust and other debris from getting into your garage through the tiny openings.

5. Return everything in place

Do you remember the items that you put in at one end of your garage? It is time to return them to their original positions. Arrange them properly while at the same time being creative.

It is important to note that you will need protective garments such as an overall, gloves and a nose mask amongst others when conducting this process. Removing dust from your garage is a very dusty process, so I recommend that you seek help if you have any allergic reactions to dust.
